Class of 2019 COMMITMENT DINNER
AUGUST 9, 2017
The commitment dinner tradition was established as a formal ceremony to recognize renewed commitment to the Armed Forces. Commitment Dinner for the second class takes place at the start of the fall semester. Once the cadets return to the Academy for their second class year, they incur the financial or active duty “commitment” for their education if they depart the Academy prior to graduation. Members of the Legacy Class, the class of 1969, are invited to attend the Commitment dinner to celebrate with the second-class cadets.

The Spirit Mission once again designed and minted a challenge coin for their Commitment Milestone. The Commitment Committee worked with the Cadet Commitment Committee to find elements that were important to them as they reaffirmed their commitment to the United States Air Force. Four designs, two fronts and two backs, were developed by the committee for parents to cast their final vote. Here is the winning coin that each Cadet that is committing will receive.
A big Thank You to Collinson Enterprises for their expertise!
Commitment Coin Design Elements
P51 & F22 Airplanes — Past and Present. The P51 symbolizes the history and the traditions of the Air Force. The F22 represents the contemporary mission of fifth generation fighters in the Air Force.
Eagle — This eagle is reminiscent of the eagle in the Legacy Class of 1969 Crest. America’s national bird serves as a patriotic reminder of the country cadets serve. The eagle, a lightning swift predator, also represents the Air Force’s ability to strike quickly.
Mountains — The mountain range containing Pikes Peak honors the majestic beauty of the Air Force Academy and the challenges faced there. The mountains remain uncolored to represent an unknown future.
Commitment Banner — The banner signifies the Milestone event this coin represents. “Commitment is doing what you said you would do, long after the mood you said it in has left you.”
Flag with 19 Visible Stars — The American flag has long served as a patriotic reminder of our nation. The nineteen visible stars are a subtle reminder of the graduation year of 2019.
Vincit Sensus, Omnia Vincit — Latin translation for ‘Conquer Mind, Conquer All’, the motto for the Class of 2019.
Air Force Memorial in D.C. — The Air Force Memorial is a reminder of the reasons for committing to the Air Force and the legacy of those who have served before them.
Chapel — It is the most striking and recognizable landmark on the USAFA campus. The chapel represents strength, unity and a higher calling.
Aim High…Fly, Fight, Win — An enduring statement of Airmen’s pride in their service. The motto is a two part expression — a call to action, a response of commitment.
Air Force Logo — The Air Force logo represents the transition to the Air Force after graduation and continued commitment to our country.
Prop and Wings — Awarded to 4th class cadets upon Recognition. They represent the effort and dedication required to conquer difficult challenges
ARE THE COINS FOR SALE?
No. While we would all love to have one, the Spirit Mission will not sell a challenge coin. The coins are earned by the cadets and are a celebration gift for their Milestone.
In lieu of selling the coin, the Spirit Mission will once again have the congratulatory card with the image of the coin and the design element meanings available for a $5.00 donation. We only have 200 cards available. Please do not delay in ordering your card. Once they are gone, they are gone.

CLASS COMMITMENT POEM
Walter writes: “As I started thinking about this poem a few months ago, an “Etheree” came to mind. It is a simple form that starts with one syllable and ends with ten. The word commitment, is direct and to the point. Dedication, loyalty, and faithfulness are all synonyms for this “Way of Life” our Dear Sons & Daughters have chosen.
The structure of an Etheree enabled me to mold the poem into a triangle, using the points of the shape to enhance the power carried by this word. And with a little imagination, one can see a “wing”. But there is more. An Etheree has ten lines, and contains fifty five syllables. Ten plus fifty five = sixty five.
The Academy was Founded in 1954…1954 + 65= 2019.”
